A Unique Pilgrimage Experience for Nursing Students
This July, an inspiring opportunity unfolds as nursing students from the University of Brighton embark on a week-long pilgrimage to Lourdes, a significant Catholic pilgrimage site nestled in the French Pyrenees. Each year, Lourdes attracts millions of pilgrims seeking not only spiritual healing but also a profound sense of community and hope. Among these devoted visitors are individuals with serious health needs or disabilities, seeking comfort in their journey through faith.
Support for Complex Health Needs
As they prepare for this journey, seven dedicated nursing students will join the Catholic Diocese of Arundel and Brighton's pilgrimage team, marking a transformative addition to their clinical training. This unique placement diverges from traditional hospital experiences, immersing students in holistic care that addresses not just physical ailments but emotional and spiritual needs as well. Over 700 pilgrims will benefit from the compassionate service of these students and experienced healthcare professionals throughout the event.
Hands-On Learning in a Spiritual Environment
Traveling by plane and utilizing a specially adapted coach known as the 'Jumbulance,' nursing students will engage in essential activities, including providing personal care, medical assistance, and emotional support during the pilgrimage. The program is open to students of all backgrounds and beliefs, emphasizing the fundamental principles of compassion and care in the nursing profession.
Sally Hao, a third-year Nursing (Adult) BSc(Hons) student, expressed her excitement about the placement, stating, "I was curious to understand what this journey means to others. It’s about belief, faith, and hope—qualities that help people face life’s challenges. This experience will not only nurture my professional skills but also enrich my personal growth. Supporting others brings strength to my own journey through nursing."
The Intersection of Faith and Profession
For some students, like Lorinda Caina, the opportunity to intertwine faith with nursing practice in Lourdes is invaluable. "Work is a form of prayer for me. I feel grateful to support pilgrims through what can be a transformative experience. I hope my participation inspires others to engage in such meaningful work. Each encounter is an opportunity to impact lives positively," she shared.
Evolving Healthcare Education
This summer placement reflects a broader ambition by the University of Brighton to diversify its nursing programs. By introducing international placements, the university aims to enhance the students' learning experiences while fostering resilience, adaptability, and empathy—traits critical for healthcare professionals.
Preparing for the Journey: Essential Training
Students undergo comprehensive training that includes 75 hours of direct patient care during the pilgrimage and 30 hours of preparatory education covering safeguarding protocols, clinical skills, and the nuances of providing care in a pilgrimage environment. Such preparation not only aids the students in meeting professional practice requirements but also through experiential learning cultivates deep insights into compassionate patient-centered care.
Growing Community Connections Through Compassion
The significance of this initiative stretches beyond the individual experiences of the students and pilgrims. It showcases the vital connection between faith, healthcare, and community by offering a platform for shared values of kindness and service. As these nursing students immerse themselves in the spiritual atmosphere of Lourdes, they build a bridge of understanding and acceptance that enriches their commitment to enhancing the quality of life for others. "Real health and wellness involve not only physical care but also emotional support and community connection. This unique placement allows our nursing students to recognize these intertwined aspects and appreciate how faith can serve as a vital source of strength for those facing health challenges," concluded a university representative.
